Once again the KA Tech Crew were given the task of managing the technical and staging aspects of our NT Connections play. Each year provides new and interesting challenges, and this year was no different.

Projection Mapping

The staging of Fishville comprises of a series of layers created from hormonal and vertical drops of semi-translucent fabric. This arrangement has both created chalenges in terms of framing and lighting, but also proved opportunities in terms of video and projection.

The Approach

The intention was to repurpose some of the layered sections of the stage as backdrops for video and effects. After initial experimentation with multiple projectors to cover each section, we eventually settled on a completely different approach by employing a single high-lumens projector with a specific wide-angle lens to cover the entire space. This has enabled us to experiment with projection onto different surfaces more readily. It will also enable the production to be transferred to another venue far more readily.

Mapping The Stage

We achieved our projection requirements with projection mapping. Our show control software (QLab) generates a number of Syphon outputs - one for each section of the stage we want to cover) This is fed into a projection mapping program (MadMapper) where the individual Syphon feeds are assembled into the desired stage regions. The software takes into account and calculates the geometry for the scaling and skewing we require.n The assembled video is then converted to HDBaseT and passed to the projector.

Sound

Sound this year is mostly atmospheric audio used as a scene-setting mechanic with only a number of SFX. The performance relies upon absolutely no music, unlike our previous years of production Ravers

Lighting

The fabric layers presented some interesting opportunities for lighting this year. We experimented with lighting from various angles to see how the light interacted with the space and the cast.

Lighting this year is entirely static in comparison with last years production of Ravers, but offers more in terms of stage interaction and co-operation with video.

The lighting aspect of the show is a mixture of generic and LED lighting programmed and control with an ETC Ion Classic.

About the KA Tech Crew

The Tech Crew are a resident team of staff and young people with a passion for the technical aspect of theatre and making productions work from behind the scenes.

The creative aspects of the connections programme are largely driven by the members of the Tech Crew.

Tech Crew meet every week, participating in training sessions, practical exercises, and working on the develop[ment of shows and events, including the operation and staffing.

Get Involved…

The Tech Crew meet every Tuesday between 7 and 9pm in the Kensington Arts Theatre  Recommended ages are 12-18 (High School). Feel free to speak to us at the end of the show (You'll find us at the back of the seating area), drop in on a session, or contact us for more information.
